Found Sound Vol.15

Bringing you the best new sounds we discover in our mailbox...

It's been a while since the previous edition of Found Sound but, thanks to an impressive number of quality submissions we have received in the last couple of months, Volume 15 is finally here presenting no less than 10 fine new tracks from a wide array of musical styles, coming from independent artists around the globe. Have a listen below to Passenger Peru, Mylets, Blisses B and Jourdan Myers from the US as well as Babaganouj from Australia, Charlotte&Magon from France, Nanaki from the Isle of Man, Signal/// from Norway, Sillyboy from Greece and Drachenhaus from Germany:

Passenger Peru - The Best Way To Drown

Brooklyn duo Passenger Peru is about to release its sophomore album "Light Places" on Fleeting Youth Records (out February 24th). After listening to its first single "The Best Way To Drown" above, click here to listen and download their cover of Hüsker Dü's "Pink Turns to Blue".

Babaganouj - Can't Stop

Strange band name but very catchy indie pop tune; Australia's Babaganouj take inspiration from bands like The Hummingbirds and The Hoodoo Gurus as well as the classic sound of Creation and Flying Nun Records. "Can't Stop", their latest single, combines boy-girl harmonies, lush melodies and '90s-style indie rock guitars to produce a fine, radio-friendly, pop tune.

Charlotte&Magon - Egg Dance

"Egg Dance" is the title track from the new four-song EP that Parisian duo Charlotte&Magon will release on March 3rd. Expect to hear psychedelic funky sounds that bring to mind the '80s new wave and electro hybrids concocted by bands like Tom Tom Club or Shriekback.

Drachenhaus - The Sunshine

"The Sunshine" is the latest track from Berlin-based post-industrial duo Drachenhaus. Radiohead's forays into electronic music have been an influence here as well as Yoko Ono ( the bridge of the song features a recitation of an event score from her conceptual artist’s book, "Grapefruit").

Nanaki - The Land Surveyor

One of the standout tracks from the album "The Dying Light", the first full-length Nanaki album since 2003. Instrumental, post-rock sounds from the solo project of Postcode guitarist Mikie Daugherty from the Isle of Man. Check out the video here and buy the album on a name-your-price basis here.

Signal/// - An Eternal Recurrence

A taste from the "Echo" EP, coming in March on Handmade Records, by Oslo noisemakers Signal///. The track is produced by Ådne Meisfjord whose credits include Serena-Maneesh and 120 Days. You can check out the video here.

Sillyboy - Stalker

Melodic electropop from Greece; "Stalker" is the title track off Sillyboy's third album, released on Klik Records at the end of 2014.

Mylets - Trembling Hands

"Trembling Hands", a track mixing Nine Inch Nails-influenced industrial rock with punk guitars is the most recent single taken from Mylets forthcoming album "Arizona", expected this April. Mylets is Henry Kohen who recently signed to Sargent House, home to the likes of Russian Circles, And So I Watch You From Afar, Chelsea Wolfe and more.

Blisses B - Well Lit Plan

Blisses B is a psychedelic folk quartet from San Francisco & Oakland. "Well Lit Plan" is one of the best tracks to be found on their third record "Sea Level Astronomy", released last fall with support from their loyal fan base through a Kickstarter Campaign. You can find the album here.

Jourdan Myers - Wanderlust

Finale with the lovely voice of singer-songwriter Jourdan Myers from Minneapolis. "Wanderlust" is taken from her second album "Ruin Me With Love" (also finished with the help of a Kickstarter Campaign) and is accompanied by a video which you can check out here.

Found Sound Vol.14

Found Sound brings you the best new music we discover by going through our mail. The series makes its long overdue comeback with fresh sounds from Mechanimal, Children Of Leir, Bongley Dead, Mumblr, Gosh Pith and tohska. There's something for everybody, have a listen:

Mechanimal - We Come Alive

Mechanimal describe their sound as "drone 'n' roll", an inspired mixture of electronic, industrial, post-punk and krautrock music. The Athens, Greece, based group has just released its second album "Secret Science" and "We Come Alive" is the first single.

Children Of Leir - Black Annis

Black Annis, as legend has it, was a hideous blue skinned, hag-like creature that haunted The Dane Hills area of Leicester. This fearsome, human flesh-eating, monster is also the inspiration behind a fine psych rock track which will be released as a double A-side single by Children Of Leir on October 27th on 7'' vinyl. Look for it on their Bandcamp site here.

Bongley Dead - A Better Daybreak

I don't know much to tell you about Bongley Dead except that they are a quartet from Ponte Buggianese, Italy who left us a link to their third demo on the comments of our review of Ty Segall's recent gig. "A Better Daybreak" is the first track on this very promising demo that brings to mind the guitar-heavy sound of the American underground rock of the '80s.

Mumblr - Got It

"Got It" is the catchy opening track of the album "Full of Snakes", the debut of Philadelphia foursome Mumblr. The record tackles the struggles, fears, and confused emotions of transitioning from youth to adulthood, a subject matter that has given us some fine angst rock over the years. You can stream the whole album here.

Gosh Pith - Waves

A wide and varied spectrum of influences, from Detroit hip-hop and techno to The Smiths, Bauhaus, and the Strokes, have inspired the sound of Gosh Pith. The unsigned group recently released its first single "Waves" which is available as a free download on their Soundcloud page.

tohska - Lacuna Bloom

Some relaxing, ambient drum & bass sounds for the ending of the 14th edition of Found Sound. "Lacuna Bloom" is the most recent single by New York-based artist tohska, a track about exploring the human mind, and a fine soundtrack as we roll the end credits.

Found Sound Vol.13

Found Sound, the post series bringing you the best new music we discover through your helpful suggestions and submissions, gets to lucky number 13! In this edition, we have new releases by artists from Greece, Italy, Ireland, the Isle of Man and the UK. Let’s start from the south and work our way to the north:

Plastic Flowers - Vicious Victims

Plastic Flowers formed three years ago in Thessaloniki, Greece, by Giorgos Samaras and Aggelos Pashalidis. The dream pop duo has just released its debut LP titled "Evergreen" on Inner-Ear Records and Crash Symbols, and "Vicious Victims", a melodic, '80s-synthpop influenced gem, is its opening track. The album, which was recorded by using various vintage analog synths, drum machines and lots of cheap guitar amps in less than two months during the summer of 2013, also features collaborations with New Yorker Ed Askew (on the track "Love is Above All") and local heroes Keep Shelly in Athens (on "Ghosts"). Check it out here.

Schonwald - Fuchsia

Schonwald may have a Germanic sounding name but they come from Ravenna, Italy. Alessandra and Luca create an atmospheric, minimalist sound that draws inspiration from '80s synth-pop and new wave. The dark, ominous sounding "Fuchsia" is their latest song in a discography that also includes the 7" single "Mercurial" on Chicago label HoZac Records, the album "Amplified Nature" on Pocket Heaven Records and this excellent cover of The Cure's "A Forest".

Für Immer - Wrapped in Plastic

Another Germanic sounding band name, but Für Immer are actually a trio from Dublin, Ireland. Rachel, Stephen and Paul formed the band in January 2010 with a view to combining innovative visuals and heartfelt music in the face of a recession gripped Ireland. The track "Wrapped in Plastic" which brings to mind the chilling beauty of the Twin Peaks theme song, is one of the highlights off their recently released debut album "March", currently available as a free download here. You can also get yourself a beautiful looking physical copy of the album from here.

Postcode - Losing The Battle

Postcode are a five-piece band from the Isle of Man and "Losing The Battle" comes from their third album "Zebratronic". This record was conceived at a time when the band was incomplete and was recorded by Mikie Daugherty and Marie Reynolds utilizing drum machines, synths, guitars, screwdrivers, drumsticks and an increased deployment of slide to create a new, more experimental sound. The album is released by Small Bear Records and is available as a pay-what-you-like download from here.

Dead Fader - In Cover

New 12" single by UK electronic experimentalist John Cohen, a.k.a. Dead Fader. "In Cover" is released by Robot Elephant Records and is available as a download and limited edition vinyl from here. The single is just an appetizer for the main course as Dead Fader has two full length album releases in store for us ("Blood Forest" and "Scorched") this April. Check out more sounds from Dead Fader here.

Found Sound Vol.12

Sounds from the underground for the adventurous music fan: Found Sound brings you the best new music we find in our mailbox and if the submissions that keep on coming can maintain the same level of quality and quantity we’ve enjoyed recently, this irregular series of posts may well turn into a monthly thing. Looking forward to the next batch - meanwhile here’s the twelfth edition of Found Sound featuring Egg Hell, Dead Leaf Echo, Lakefield, Clouder, Hot Wives and Gretchen Lohse.

Egg Hell - Suffering

"Suffering" is one of the standout tracks on Egg Hell's debut album "Once Part Of A Whole Ship". The Athens, Greece, based indie-pop band is led by Sao Paulo-born Jef Maarawi and offers memorable melodies that travel in an ocean of agitated guitars bringing to mind early Radiohead. Listen to the whole adventure here.

Dead Leaf Echo - true.deep.sleeper

Last April we had presented here Dead Leaf Echo's debut LP "Thought & Language". The New York shoegazing collective returns on February 25 with the four-song EP "true.deep.sleeper", mixed by Monte Vallier (Soft Moon, Weekend), and a series of dates including shows at SXSW in March. Listen to the title track above and expect a second album in the near future as the band has already began working on it.

Lakefield - Good Guy

"Good Guy" is taken from Lakefield's "Swan Songs" EP, literally the Vancouver, BC, band's swan song as this is their final release. To use their own words: "Swan Songs is the result of a blood promise between the five of us, to deliver one final wholehearted performance amidst our death throes. We consider it our most vital work; a perfect portrait of our band at its very end.". The EP was released on February 14th and you can get it from here.

Clouder - Lost In Reverie

"Lost In Reverie" is the first single from Clouder's sophomore album, "Sister Raygun", due out March 4th. The song's dark and urgent sound brings to mind the fertile mix of psychedelic rock and punk that bloomed in the US underground of the '80s.

Hot Wives - Hand That Bites the Feed

More '80s influenced distorted rock, this time from Atlanta, Georgia, four-piece Hot Wives whose influences include bands like Scratch Acid, The Stooges, the Bad Seeds and the Minutemen. "Hand That Bites the Feed" comes from the band's first EP "This Man Refused to Open His Eyes".

Bonus track:
Gretchen Lohse - Spider at the Gate

We've already talked about Gretchen Lohse and her enchanting solo debut "Primal Rumble" on the previous edition of Found Sound. We're signing off Volume 12 with her brand new video for the album track "Spider at the Gate" which made its premier at the end of last week - enjoy:

Found Sound Vol.11

Sounds from the underground for the adventurous music fan: In the 11th edition of Found Sound we have collected some of the most interesting submissions we've received lately plus the latest findings in our ongoing quest for discovering cool new music. As usual, the mix is diverse and all over the map:

Childbirth - I Only Fucked You As A Joke

As luck would have it, I came across Childbirth the same day I saw the documentary "The Punk Singer" about Kathleen Hanna and the riot grrl movement. Childbirth, a Seattle "supergroup" comprising of Julia Shapiro (guitar, vocals), Bree McKenna (bass, vocals), and Stacy Peck (drums), continue the tradition with the riotous mini LP "It's a Girl!", available on cassette from Help Yourself Records and digitally here. Have a listen above to the hilariously twisted single "I Only Fucked You As A Joke", it's a blast!

The Noise Figures - Out Of Your Mind

Explosive blues-punk with '60s influences from the Athens, Greece, duo The Noise Figures: "Out Of Your Mind" is taken from their self-titled debut LP, released late last year on Inner Ear Records (available here). Fans of Jack White will find plenty to like in this noisy 30-minute wild ride!

Alien Hand Syndrome - Slumber

Alien Hand Syndrome is the alias of Viennese artist Clemens Engert who recently released his second album, "Slumber", an intriguing strain of dark, melodic alternative rock combined with classical piano/cello arrangements. Check out above the title track of the album, whose video uses material from the 1903 film "Alice in Wonderand" by Cecil Hepworth and Percy Stow and go here for more info and music downloads.

Gretchen Lohse - Ornament Of The Enamored Heart

And here's another artist with a fondness for silent films. Philadelphia singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Gretchen Lohse creates barebones folk songs built around her enchanting voice and guitar. Flutes, strings and synthesizers creep in the background as well as sounds mined from her collection of old, warped VHS home movies creating otherworldly yet comfortingly familiar psych folk soundscapes. The track "Ornament of the Enamored Heart" comes from her solo album "Primal Rumble", available for download here and on cassette through Humble Twin Records.

Passenger Peru - Heavy Drugs

For the finale, a dose of psychedelic pop with "Heavy Drugs", the first single off Passenger Peru’s self-titled album due out January 28th on cassette and digital formats via Fleeting Youth Records. The Brooklyn duo consists of Justin Stivers (bassist on The Antlers album "Hospice") and multi-instrumentalist Justin Gonzales who recorded the album over the course of a year in Brooklyn basements and tranquil locations in the foothills of the Alaskan wilderness.

Found Sound Vol.10

Think of it as a mixtape with the best tunes we have received in our inbox. The 10th edition of Found Sound was compiled in record breaking time thanks to the quantity and quality of submissions from all around the world. In Volume 10 you'll hear music from Greece, France, China, America and Australia, and we're starting off with a favorite track from a band very close to home:

Tango With Lions - Slippery Roads

The leading track from Tango With Lions' sophomore LP "A Long Walk", one of the best releases of the Greek indie scene for 2013. The album, initially released digitally this spring, is now getting a worldwide release by Inner Ear and Rough Trade Distribution. Fans of bands like Mazzy Star or Widowspeak should definitely lend an ear to this!

The Black Waves - 1000 Miles Away

And here is something for fans of the psychedelic sounds of bands like The Black Angels or Spacemen 3. The Black Waves from France are another fine addition to the great club of bands with the word "Black" in the their name. The track "1000 Miles Away" is taken from their recently released debut LP "Thousands Of Visions", an album steeped in sweet distortion and ear-melting reverberation that summons the spirit of Syd Barrett to the darklands of The Jesus And Mary Chain.

Major Leagues - Silver Tides

Second appearance of Brisbane, Australia, garage-pop four-piece Major Leagues in our blog (check out also this) thanks to yet another fine single with ultra-catchy, sweet melodies and influences from the best indie-pop of the '90s. "Silver Tides" is perhaps the sound of what would have happened if Juliana Hatfield had left The Blake Babies to jam with The Pastels sometime around 1992! A new 10" EP titled "Weird Season" is expected on December 6 - stay tuned...

The Walking Sticks - Send The Night

Dream-pop is in high demand right now and here is a band you should get acquainted with if you're into soulful vocals and down-tempo synth grooves. The Walking Sticks, from Silver Spring, Maryland, is a trio comprising of Chelsea Lee and twin brothers Max and Spencer Ernst. "Send the Night" is the title track of their new EP which will be released on December 10.

Nova Heart - My Song 9

More dreamy synth sounds, this time all the way from China! Nova Heart's "My Song 9" is a track that would fit perfectly on the "Drive" soundtrack next to Kavinsky and The Chromatics. You can check out the video for the song, filmed in the mountains outside of Beijing, here.

Satchmode - Old Fears

Our dream-pop journey around the world continues. From Beijing, we now go to Los Angeles for a taste of the chilled sounds of Satchmode.

Sound Strider - Menlo Park

Time to up the tempo - here's a sample off Sound Strider's new EP "Intrepid Travels", which you can download from here by naming your price.

The Griswolds - Mississippi

And something for fans of MGMT's first album with a twist of Vampire Weekend as well. "Mississippi" is the new single by Sydney-based alt-pop quintet The Griswolds who have recently wrapped up a successful stint at CMJ Music Marathon in New York. Their debut album is expected next year.

Delco Pacers - Blue Trucks

For the finale of our Found Sound mixtape, a dose of Americana-flavored indie rock from Philly’s Delco Pacers. The trio, comprising of singer-guitarist Jonathan Pitts, bassist Evan Dick and drummer Pavlo Demkiv, will release its debut LP "Stereo Streets" on November 19th.

Keep those emails coming, Volume 11 is coming soon...

Found Sound Vol.9

Our inbox has once again filled up with some pretty cool music submissions, which means it's time for the return of Found Sound, the series of posts dedicated to the best new music that finds its way somehow to Cool Music Central's doorstep!  As usual, there's quite a variety of sounds in the mix, ranging from experimental noise to folk rock. Have a listen and see if there's something for you in here:

The Worriers - Little Lucy

Sounds like a hit to me... The Worriers are an indie-pop band from Brisbane, Australia, and "Little Lucy" is their debut single, a three-minute blast of energetic guitars and strong harmonies that bring to mind some of the finest '90s britpop. There is also an EP on the way, titled "The Worriers Ruin Everything".

RY X - Vampires

The first release on Swedish label Dumont Dumont is the EP "Berlin" by LA-based Australian RY X. The fragile acoustic folk melodies of the title track will remind you of Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes, but the standout track of the EP for me is "Vampires", with a haunting melody that rides upon skeletal beats and handclaps.

Viva Viva - Dead In Yr Tracks

Boston, Massachusetts, band Viva Viva, the winners of Sonicbids "Emerging Artist" competition, released the four-track EP "Dead In Yr Tracks" in August. Their mix of garage and blues is powerful and very catchy while the excellent title-track, their bastardized tribute to The Rolling Stones "Miss You", comes off like a cross between Spoon and The Black Keys.

Truest - Cities

Truest formed in New York by Adam Weiss and Jason Desiderio who recruited Matt Schaefer, David Saracino and Ian Carroll to create a quintet that could produce as big a live sound as they do on tape. "Cities", a track which describes the overwhelming transition one faces when moving from the suburbs to the heart of a major metropolis, is their first single. Their debut album, "Lush", is expected on December 3rd.

So Stressed  - Attracted To Open Mouths

Manic noise-rock from Sacramento, California, band So Stressed who released the 8-track album "Attracted To Open Mouths" last year on cassette and as a digital download. The album is out now on CD by Music Ruins Lives and we think it rocks - hard!

Tiger In My Tank - Inverted People

"Inverted People" by Tiger In My Tank, the band name under which guitarist Sebastian Castillo is releasing his music, combines the lo-fi buzz of early Guided By Voices with the melodic guitar noise of The Jesus And Mary Chain. If you’re into this type of noise-pop cocktails, you’ll find plenty more to like in the recently released album "Cigarette Royalty" which you can download for free from bandcamp or here.

The Savage Nomads - Jaded Edges

Infectious indie pop from South London's The Savage Nomads. Check out the video for "Jaded Edges" here and if you like what you hear, you can get the track for free or pay what you like from the band's bandcamp page.

White Summer - Head In The Sand

Gritty swamp-blues from Melbourne, Australia, trio White Summer. The single "Head In The Sand" is the first taste from the band's forthcoming EP "What I've Been Waiting For".

 Heyward Howkins - Nogales

And a folk-rock fix from Heyward Howkins (former lead guitarist of The Trouble With Sweeney and founding member of The Silver Ages) with "Nogales", the lead track from his sophomore album "Be Frank, Furness", out on November 5.

peopling - Live Session

For the finale of this edition of Found Sound we have a live session by peopling, the experimental noise project of Ronnie Gonzalez from New York, which was recorded last October for DJ Jeff Grainger's show on Dandelion Radio UK. My recommendation would be "Which is Width" - enjoy the noise:

Found Sound Vol.8: Dead Leaf Echo, Slowness, Kabul Golf Club, Red Traces, Sonen, Hectic Zeniths, Gypsy Eyes

In the Found Sound series of posts we bring you the most interesting music submissions we receive and since our inbox is currently filled with them, it is time for Volume 8. Check out below stand out tracks from new releases by Dead Leaf Echo, Slowness, Kabul Golf Club, Red Traces, Sonen, Hectic Zeniths and Gypsy Eyes:

Dead Leaf Echo - Memorytraces ("Thought & Language" LP)

Dead Leaf Echo, from Brooklyn, New York, have just released digitally their debut LP "Thought and Language" (listen and download here). Its 11 tracks bring together the early '90s shoegaze sound of bands like Catherine Wheel or Chapterhouse with the ethereal aesthetic of the 4AD sound of the same period. The 4AD influence goes further as the album was mixed by John Fryer (who has worked, among others, with Lush) while the artwork is by Vaughan Oliver, the label's legendary designer. A free download of album highlight "Memorytraces" is available here.

Slowness - Calm & Dispel ("For Those Who Wish to See the Glass Half Full" LP)

More dream-pop with a fondness for that early '90s sound, this time from San Francisco. Slowness (who have shared a split single with kindred spirits Dead Leaf Echo in the recent past) released their debut album "For Those Who Wish to See the Glass Half Full" last month on Blue Aurora Audio, with production from Weekend and The Soft Moon collaborator Monte Vallier and mastering by Kramer (Low, Galaxie 500, Bongwater). You can listen and purchase the eight-song LP (which was among our 12 favorites in the most recent Listening Habits post)  here.

Kabul Golf Club - Demon Days ("Le Bal Du Rat Mort" EP)

Explosive punk rock from Belgium that follows in the footsteps of bands like The Jesus Lizard and At The Drive-In. "Le Bal Du Rat Mort" is the debut EP from Kabul Golf Club and features five prime examples of highly energetic, lightning-fast noise rock. Listen to all of them here.

Red Traces - Once Were

Red Traces is led by Los Angeles-based musician Albert Ovadia. The single "Once Were" which brings to mind the atmospheric rock of Blonde Redhead, is produced by Erix S. Laurent (who records his own music under the name Teepee) and is the promising first sample that we get from their forthcoming debut album.

Sonen - Two of You ("Inside the Sun" LP)

SONEN "Two of You" from Sonen Music on Vimeo.

Orgiastic electropop from Atlanta, Georgia, from Sonen, a duo made up of Keith Evans and Holly Mullinax. The band's debut full-length "Inside the Sun" was released on April 9th and you can listen to it in full here.

Hectic Zeniths - Beau Geste ("Type One Era" EP)

"Type One Era" is the new EP from multi-instrumentalist Adam Morgan Prince who records his atmospheric electronic music under the name Hectic Zeniths. You can check out the whole EP, which features collaborations with Brooklyn singer/songwriter Eric Lindley and rapper Sketch Lightly, here.

Gypsy Eyes - REM EP

Debut EP from Gypsy Eyes on Noise Met Sound, the newly founded label by DIY electronic artist LAw. You can download it for free or pay what you can here.

Found Sound Vol.7: Zebra Tracks, Time And Energy, Generator Ohm, Vajra, Minor Sounds

Found Sound, our series of posts showcasing the best new tunes we discover based on your suggestions, is back in less than a month since the previous edition, thanks to the quality of submissions we’ve received lately. Volume 7 features some of our favorite tracks from new releases by Zebra Tracks, Time And Energy, Generator Ohm, Vajra and Minor Sounds plus, as a bonus, a new cut from the latest free mixtape by Found Sound alumnus (see also this) LAw.

If you have a tune or album you'd like to share with us, you can reach C.M.C. through the email address on this page or you can contact us through facebook, twitter or soundcloud. Volume 8 needs your input!

Zebra Tracks - A Moment Of Life

One of the highlights off "Collective Guilt", Zebra Tracks’ second long-player. The Athens, Greece, indie rockers have recently released their album digitally in North America via Miami, FL-based Limited Fanfare Record and are organizing a North American tour, which will end up in SXSW festival in March 2013. Listen to all 9 tracks here and check out the rest of Limited Fanfare’s releases here (personal favorite: The Ettes' single "Teeth")

Time And Energy - Tree Salad

Time And Energy is a California-based experimental rock duo with a wide range of influences (from Battles to Badly Drawn Boy), comprising of Jorge Rios and Brennan Roach. "Tree Salad", a melodic guitar track with meandering rhythms that brings to mind a more laid back version of White Denim, is taken from their forthcoming second album "Strange Kind of Focus" which you can listen to in full here.

Generator Ohm - Platius

An interesting scene seems to be forming around the King Killer Studios in Brooklyn, NYC. We've already met EndAnd in the previous edition of Found Sound, time to make our acquaintance with the furious guitars of Generator Ohm. "Platius" is taken from the trio's debut album "Upon the Me Om I" which is released this December - listen to it in full by clicking here.

Vajra - Inside The Flame

The title ("Pleroma") and cover art of Vajra’s debut album is of Greek origin but its core influences reach further east to India where composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist, Annamaria Pinna was located when she decided to start a band. The imposing "Inside The Flame" is "Pleroma"'s opening track, which reminds me of the eastern-influenced sounds of Religious To Damn, one of our favorite new bands of 2011. To listen to the full album which includes appearances by Blake Fleming (ex-The Mars Volta) on drums, Doug Wright (The Dirty Pearls) on bass and Will Dahl (ex-Harley’s War) on guitar, click here.

Minor Sounds - Gravity

Minor Sounds is the dark folk - electronic project created by Brighton, UK, based Croatian singer-songwriter Mirna Stanich and Warsaw based producer Martin Zietek. "Gravity" is one of the more upbeat, electronic-leaning tracks of their atmospheric, lo-fi debut album "The Humming" (listen in full here) which was recorded in a few living rooms around Brighton and Martin's home studio in a village near Warsaw between 2009 and 2012.

Bonus track: LAw - Freak Show

Celebrating one year since his debut mixtape and while putting the finishing touches to his new LP "Idiom" (out December 14th), LAw has just released a new, free mixtape titled "Silence is Still Golden, So Shut the F_ck Up". Click above to listen to "Freak Show", our choice for the outro of Found Sound Volume 7, and then go for the full thing here.

Found Sound Vol.6: Sillyboy, The Foreign Resort, Metal Feathers, EndAnd, Sad Disco

The 6th edition of Found Sound features some of the highlights from more than 20 noteworthy music submissions we've received in the three months since our previous post. We should really start doing this more often! So, if you have a tune or album you'd like to share with us, you can reach C.M.C. through the email address here or contact us through facebook, twitter, soundcloud, or last.fm. We have our ears open and Volume 7 cannot happen without your input!

Sillyboy - Name your God

To start with, here’s the opening track from Sillyboy’s new album, "Nature Of Things", released on September 24th via Just Gazing Records and through the distribution of EPM Music. It’s the second solo LP from the Athens, Greece art-rocker who started his music career producing music for TV commercials and playing bass for The Expert Medicine. The full album, certainly one of the finest releases of the Greek indie scene this year, is available for streaming here.

The Foreign Resort - Delayed

The Foreign Resort from Copenhagen, Denmark, combine the expansive sound of post rock with the guitar textures of shoegaze and the melodic lines of '80s new wave. "Delayed" is the opening track and first single from their collection "Scattered & Buried" which features new material, remakes and remixes. The record, out on September 25th through Monolathe Records in the US and Phonofile Distribution in Europe, is the follow up to last year’s promising self-titled EP which opened the way for them to share the stage with bands like A Place to Bury Strangers, Swervedriver and The Raveonettes who hand-picked them for support on their Denmark tour.

Metal Feathers - Jail Sound

"Contrast Eats The Slimey Green", the second album by Metal Feathers from Portland, Maine, has been out for more than a year now and we think that you should definitely take the time to have a listen to it here if you’re into the punk-psychedelic garage sound that used to thrive back in the '80s. Tunes like "Jail Sound" or "City Hall" bring to mind the early recordings of bands like Screaming Trees or Plasticland. This is definitely not the guitar sound of 2012 and this is exactly the reason why it stands out. A new album, titled "Handful of Fog", is expected soon on Teenarena Records.

EndAnd - Commando

And here's our recommended daily dose of heavy, noise-rock courtesy of EndAnd from Brooklyn, New York. "Commando" is taken from the EP "Adventures of Hi-Fi in Space", which was released simultaneously with its companion EP "Adventures of Lo-Fi in Space" back in June. Whether you prefer polished studio quality or DIY style recordings, EndAnd got it all covered in these two releases that burst with '90s-style, big guitar sounds.

Sad Disco - Hurt

Back to Athens for the first double A-side single by Sad Disco. "Hurt / Honestly" is the first taste from the promising synth-pop act's upcoming debut album and is available as a free download here.

Bonus: Bruxa - Victimeyez

Bruxa, the post-witch house stars of Found Sound 5 with the hellishly catchy "V∆!", just released their new album "Victimeyez" through Мишка Records as a free download. Get your digital copy here and wait 'till next month for the stylishly old-fashion cassette release from Sweating Tapes.

Found Sound 5 with Bruxa, LAw, La Femme, Young Hines, Dead Leaf Echo, The Paellas

It took a while, but Found Sound is back once again with a handful of fine tunes selected among several submissions from promising new artists around the globe as well as other discoveries through the various social media outlets out there. If you have a tune you think we might like, you can reach Cool Music Central through facebook, twitter, soundcloud, or last.fm or even drop us a line to the address here. We can't answer to all of your emails but you can rest assured that we'll listen to your music and our favorite songs will be the subject of a future Found Sound post. So let's get started with Volume 5:

Bruxa - V∆!

Last August Portland post-witch-house synthpunks Bruxa dropped the limited edition cassette "Eye On Everybody" (listen here). This was the intriguing first part of a trilogy that will continue with the release of a second EP on Sweating Tapes sometime this summer. As "V∆!" shows with its combination of horror hip-hop beats, Front 242-style menacing synths and Sly and Robbie references, Bruxa are putting their dancing shoes on for this one. You should also check out the awesome Nightmare Fortress remix available as a free download here.

LAw - Conscious Warriors

We first introduced you to the electro - hip hop - beat experiments of Los Angeles DIY artist LAw in the previous edition of Found Sound. Last month LAw returned with the release of his self produced album "Experimental Imagination" which you can hear in its entirety here. The 12 songs on the album were chosen among a hundred other compositions and we've picked one of our favorites, "Conscious Warrior", to present for your listening pleasure here.

La Femme - Paris 2012

La Femme is a mysterious new wave and surf rock influenced six-piece from Paris, France. Check out below the excellent sci-fi video for their latest release "Paris 2012”, their second single, and go here to listen to their fine debut EP "Le Podium #1".

Young Hines - Can't Explode

Here's something for fans of Brendan Benson or Jack White. Georgia native Young Hines was discovered by Brendan Benson when he happened to listen to one of his demos which some of Young's friends were playing while they were painting Benson's house. The result of this happy accident was Benson producing Young Hines' album "Give Me My Change" which came out this spring on Readymade Records in the US and Lojinx in Europe. Have a listen to the rockin' "Can't Explode" above and check out the video here.

Dead Leaf Echo - Act of Truth

New York indie rockers Dead Leaf Echo are about to release their debut LP "Thought & Language" on Custom Made Music, mixed by John Fryer and with artwork by Vaughan Oliver (frequent 4AD collaborators both). The dreamy "Act of Truth" is a non-album track which will be released as a split single with Slowness, out on June 26 via Greenfuse Records.

The Paellas - Lights / Long Night Comes

When I first read the name The Paellas I naturally assumed they were Spanish. They are actually a lo-fi indie pop band from Osaka, Japan who recently released as a free download the lovely single "Lights / Long Night Comes", the second of which is my favorite, sounding like a long lost Sarah Records b-side.

Found Sound 4 with Wise Lines, Alejandra O'Leary, The Cymatics, peopling, LAw, King Kong Company

In the fourth installment of Found Sound, the series of posts where we introduce our latest discoveries from emerging artists, we have put together an eclectic mix of synth and indie pop, garage and noise rock, electronica and '90s style big beat. Let’s start with something close to home:

Wise Lines - Towards The Sun

Wise Lines are two guys and a girl (Ted Sourvinos, Anthony Georgou, Niki Papagiani) from Athens, Greece who have just started their common sound explorations with the single "Towards The Sun", available as a free download from their bandcamp page. Now that Keep Shelly In Athens have put Athens on the global synth pop map with their ethereal mix of pop melodies and chilled out electro beats, here’s a new band that proves that there’s more of this sound to be found in these parts.

Both tracks on the single have a strong vocal melody supported by ethereal backing vocals with "Towards The Sun"’s slow beats getting support from a discrete guitar riff (video here) and "This Love" coming closer to dance-rock territory with its insistent bass line.

Alejandra O’Leary - Broken Mirror Baby

Broken Mirror Baby (mp3 link)

"Broken Mirror Baby" is the title track from Alejandra O’Leary’s recently released second album. The Ann Arbor, Michigan, singer and guitarist combines melodic pop with driving rock’n’roll, equally indebted to classic '60s rock and the alternative sound of the last couple of decades, from britpop to The Strokes. If you appreciated the childlike quality of Juliana Hatfield’s voice in her '90s work, you should definitely have a listen to Alejandra’s power-pop creations. Start with a visit here.

The Cymatics - One Way Ticket

"One Way Ticket" is one of the six tracks of the second batch of demos from The Cymatics recorded earlier in the month by Magnus Sellergren in one marathon fifteen hour session. The band is the new project from American ex-patriate Ross Kersten of The LaDonnas/Mochines (currently residing in South Africa), Magnus Sellergren from Sweden who has previous history in The Dialtones/Plastiques and Italian Allesandro Della Ratta from The Homebreakers. Sounds like an international noise conspiracy to me. For more of their noisy mix of garage punk and bubblegum pop go here.

peopling - Come Home Eccentric

Lead track from the debut self-released 6-track EP by Brooklyn, New York, noise-rock artist peopling. For the full experience of the "peopling EP"’s experimental chaos, go here and be prepared for some extreme noise terror!

LAw - Music is Me

LAw (pronounced L-a-double u) is an independent musician from Los Angeles who mixes electronica and hip-hop along with elements of jazz and R&B. The free mixtape "Silence is Golden, So shut the F_ck up" is intended to be more of a message than just a few tracks put together, so it also features speeches and samples from diverse sources (from rapper KRS One to punk pioneers X-Ray Spex) that express the ideals and beliefs of the artist. The full mixtape is available here, while a new EP is expected on Christmas.

King Kong Company - Panic Button

King Kong Company, from Waterford, Ireland, is an electronic dance act who has shared stages with the likes of Orbital and Underworld. The band started its career in 1996, a good period for dance music, and disbanded in 2001, but this year the idea of doing a gig together again came up. Since February the band has been releasing one new music video each month which you can check out here and they are preparing for a live gig next year. Here’s the video for the dubby "Panic Button", one of their best new tracks, which was released in October:

Found Sound 3 featuring The Church Of Synth, Casiokids, Anomie Belle, VUM

Time for the third installment of Found Sound, our column dedicated to the presentation of our latest music discoveries based on your suggestions. We'd like to thank everybody who has submitted mp3s or links to new music. Even though we don't always have time to answer to all of your emails, I can assure you that we'll always find the time to listen to anything that you send to us and the best of the crop will find its way in one of our Found Sound posts. So, let's see what we have this time:

The Church Of Synth - Der Fall von Leviathan / Das drohnen der Gottlichen Rader

The Church Of Synth by Robot Elephant Records

Here's something that will be appreciated by all synth worshipers - The Church Of Synth has opened its doors and is awaiting for all the faithful! The man responsible for all services is a Hanover, Germany, based former techno producer and current student of psychological therapy who grew up surrounded by vintage analogue synthesizers collected by his father. His debut self-titled album has just been released on Robot Elephant Records and is an impressive mix of gothic, dark-wave atmospherics and slow and heavy witch house beats. Get your copy of the LP here.

Casiokids - Det haster!

Casiokids - Det haster! by Polyvinyl Records

From Germany to Norway for Casiokids who have just released their new LP "Aabenbaringen Over Aaskammen" on Polyvinyl. The title roughly translates to "The Revelation Over The Mountain", but you can rest assured that you won't need a dictionary to enjoy the infectiously melodic and highly danceable tunes on offer. The track "Det haster!" (available as a free downloaded here) relies on the sounds of the Casio synthesizer that gave the band its name, but on this album the band has expanded its sonic palette, trying out different instrumentation and recording techniques, resulting in their most varied and rewarding work to date.

Anomie Belle - It's a Crush

Its a Crush by Anomie Belle

Seattle-based singer, composer and producer Anomie Belle has quite an impressive resume, having toured or shared the stage with artists such as Tricky, Little Dragon, The  Album Leaf,  Bonobo, Asobi Seksu, Kid Koala, Efterklang and Sea Wolf. "It's a Crush" is one of the standout tracks from her new album "The Crush", which also features collaboration with rapper Mr Lif and Jon Auer from The Posies. Slick, electropop grooves with a trip-hop flavor and a very soulful performance from Anomie Belle who has a truly unique vocal style (at times she reminded me of CocoRosie, another quite unique act, with a more prevalent soul influence).

Newtimers - Falling

   Newtimers - Falling by Newtimers

Next up an offering from Sweden; Newtimers are Andreas Cavaco and Tim Lundblad from Stockholm and the track "Falling" comes from the upcoming album "Ego". Funky, pop music with a debt to Prince, not so far away from what Of Montreal attempted last year with "False Priest". Alternative R'n'B music that can lure the indie-pop kids on the dancefloor.

Hectic Zeniths - Curtain

   03 curtain by hecticzeniths

And speaking of Prince, here's Adam Morgan Prince, aka New York-born, Philadelphia-based Hectic Zeniths. Hectic Zeniths' chilled, densely layered electronic compositions rely on original piano recordings mixed with chopped up samples, synths and live instrumentation featuring violinist Patrick Bailey, guitarist Dave Cohen, and The Yetti on drums. "Curtains" is the rare sort of ambient music that it's too good to keep in the background.

VUM - Night Sun

   Night Sun by VUM

"Night Sun" is the second release by VUM, a two-piece hailing from Topanga Canyon, California, featuring Jennifer Pearl (ex-Lion Fever, Lost Kids) and Christopher Badger (Grand Elegance). The album features twelve haunting tracks of minimalist psychedelia, recorded in Neil Young's '60s recording studio and in the jungles of the South Pacific. It's out on cassette on Living Tapes on October 21st and on limited edition vinyl in November on Secret Lodge. Get yourself a copy of the future collectible LP or download it from here.

Stereo Soul Future - The Freeze

"The Freeze" is the first single (and free download) from the just-released third album "Ghost in the Night" by Boston-based Stereo Soul Future. Back-to-basics, melodic guitar rock that looks up to bands like Wilco and Spoon but lacks the experimental edge that these two bands are capable of displaying. A good listen, nonetheless, if you're in the mood for something more laid-back and mellow.

Parties - Black Budgets

   Black Budgets by Parties

And if you feel like partying with something punkier and, frankly, quite crazy, here's "Black Budgets" from the mysterious Parties. They dropped me a line with just a link to their SoundCloud page and no other info about them, but since I really enjoyed this tune, I am going to share it here with you.

Keep those suggestions coming, Found Sound 4 is just around the corner!
